Under 18 - Why do I have to add a parent/adult?

  • Updated

Copper is a banking app that connects a checking account, issued in an adult's name, to a debit card for their authorized youth/teen's use for spending.

To meet legal requirements, the individual opening the checking account must be 18 years old or older. In order to establish a new checking account, the bank must verify the adult's identity, like other banks, with an ID and SSN.

Once the adult has set up the checking account, Copper connects a debit card for the youth/teen's use of funds with the adult's permission and supervision.

We have had many adults set accounts up for youth/teens in their family - parents, guardians, grandparents, and more.

Based on the federal requirements for a bank to open a checking account, an active parent/guardian checking account must be set up before we can activate the teen/youth linked debit card.
